Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to release September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target price increase is two percent.
