Fierce Winds Cause Numerous Homes Without Power in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to remain inside as severe gales batter the region.

Powerful gusts hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left around 90,000 homes lacking electricity and led authorities to cancel over 100 air travel services, as reported by local media.

The gales are influencing the entire southern region and southern sections of the North Island, according to the country's meteorological service.

The nation's agencies have released rare red wind warnings - the top caution category - in core zones such as Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Widespread Destruction and Crisis Response

This outage seems to be impacting residences predominantly in the southern region, though officials state that energy was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have stated that in certain areas roofs have been ripped off houses, while utility poles and vegetation have been knocked down by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on earlier this week.

Also in the capital, a female was swept into approaching vehicles on a street by a powerful blast, in a incident that was captured in a widely shared car camera footage.

Flights entering and leaving the urban area have been halted as a result of the gusts, whereas certain highways and community centers are also closed.

At the same time Canterbury officials have announced a emergency situation, to support recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Alongside Severe Weather

The powerful gales on today occur while many of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been described as a "major walkout", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

However the severe conditions has compelled them to alter some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies shifted to interior venues or called off.

Comparable winds are also sweeping Australia, causing a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have announced burning restrictions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
