Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a significant disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a decisive crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been steady. However, if it fails to take decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
