Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System This Season.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the ability to question specific calls made by the official, echoing the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
